Review: Geese migration Tour (march 2016)

In half of march there was a wildlife weekend tour to Biebrza basin. 7 people participated in that quite intense trip.

Everything started in the Friday evening. Slow drive brought us some observation of amphibians crossing the road. After accommodation we had a short meeting about plans for next days.

Elk in the woods
Saturday was the driving day. It started in the morning with ''elk searching trip''. It brought us more that ten stunning moments with close eye to eye elk meetings. Everyone who wanted to see one, had really good opportunities to learn how adult and almost one-year elk looks like.

Geese take-off
After breakfast we had a drive in search of birds especially geese.
During few hours tour we had really nice meeting with geese (including barnacle geese), white tailed eagles, lapwings, buzzards, rough legged buzzards, cranes, goldeneyes, pintails, wigeons, mallards,  skylarks, great grey shrikes and many others. First ruffs could be seen (but not so colorful yet). We haven't had luck to see otter, beaver or mink but we had a really nice view on wildboar just on the other bank of the river. After a dinner we had a slow drive back to the hotel.

In the evening we had a short walk for a meeting with a tawny owl. End of the day brought us a little time for talk and for ourselves.

White-backed woodpecker
Sunday we started at the sunrise. We walk through the marsh forest. It was absolutely great due to meetings. We had a really good view on a black woodpecker, greater spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker, and white backed woodpecker.

Next we had an impresive concert of two cranes calling from 20-30 m from us. It was quiet everywhere and only cranes calling! Than we encountered white tailed eagles during their breakfast! 6 birds were having their meal on a carrion. Massive birds from really close made a great impression on everyone!

After that we had our breakfast and another birding day - that day with beautiful sunshine! Marvellous colours and fantastic visability! It was really sad that our tour was slowly ending, and we had to start our way back in the late afternoon.

Luckily next trip to Biebrza region soon!
