Review: Winter Carpathians Tour (february 2016)

It was a great time in Carpathians those days! The weather maybe wasn't perfect - it was quite windy at the beginning but later snow fell and it was magic!

Golden eagle with ravens
Few days of driving and tracking in Carpathians were absolutely fantastic!
Shortly: first we drove to the region where a new national park is planned. Beautiful views and really wild nature in places abandoned nearly 100 years ago. Not so far from the river bank we found a dead dog's corpse. We succeed due to ravens which were like the sign for us. Dog was the prey of a wolf pack for sure. Few hours of trip and something like that!

Wolf in the field
On the next day we drove through the wide and wild valley. At the beginning we spotted a red fox. About ten minutes later we saw a golden eagle fighting with two ravens. While we were taking photos of eagle we spotted a grey wolf about 20-30 meters from us! It was amazing. Walking slowly, with no fear just by the stream. Probably it didn't notice us. We had a perfect view for more than a minute! After that it entered a young forest and it was impossible to follow.

Fresh brown bear and wolf tracks
Later that day we had a really nice spotting of rough-legged buzzard. Everything with beautiful views on mountains and forests covered with snow. We stopped at the San river for another short walk what resulted in many red deer tracks, and bison tracks! Next we had enjoyable dinner in stylish restaurant and than we drove to the sleeping place. On our way we had really fresh tracks of wolf pack (5-6 individuals) and fresh wolf poo.

Carpathians landscape
Early morning on the last day we started our walk nearby the place we were sleeping. Shortly we found really fresh tracks of brown bear and place where it killed a wild boar. In that place we found also tracks of wolfs (probably the same pack we had day before). Many signs of wolf and brown bear activity could be found there. During that hiking we saw few red deers, roe deers, red squirrels, signs of otters and beavers. We were passing hazel grouse, pygmy owl, and ural owl territories searching for lynx tracks or prey but that time we didn't had that luck.

Wolf track
On our way back to Cracow, close to our accomodation place we had more brown bear and wolf tracks, and we heard that another people found red deer killed by wolfs (only legs could be recognised). Filled with emotions we had our drive home. Not many things could make that trip better!
